Your home's roof is its first line of defence against leaks, draughts, and anything else the elements might throw at it, but even the sturdiest roof can’t stay strong forever. That’s where flat roofing systems come into play. Designed to fit snugly over your existing roof, they provide an additional layer of protection while extending your roof’s lifespan for years to come.

At Hampshire Green Roofs, we specialise in installing all sorts of advanced flat roof systems. Built from premium materials and installed to the highest standard, they’ll give you the peace of mind you’ve been looking for.

What Flat Roof Systems Do We Install?

We install four innovative roofing systems: liquid membranes, bitumen felt, single-ply, and lead flat roofs. You can learn more about each type below!

Liquid Roof Membranes

As the name suggests, a liquid roof membrane is applied in a liquid state and cures to form a seamless, waterproof roofing system. Here are some of its benefits:

  • Unlike traditional rolled roofing materials, which have seams that can be prone to leaks, a liquid roof membrane is ideal for complex roofs with many details and penetrations.
  • A liquid roof membrane can easily conform to uneven surfaces, making it a great option for waterproofing flat roofs.
  • A liquid roof membrane is typically made from a polyurethane or acrylic resin and applied in a cold-applied process, which means that no heat is required. This makes it a safe option for use on a variety of substrates, including metal, concrete, and wood.

Bitumen Felt Roofs

A bitumen felt roof is made from multiple layers of felt material fused together with bitumen. Bitumen is a sticky, black substance derived from petroleum that acts as a waterproof binder. Here are some of its advantages:

  • The multiple layers provide strength, impact resistance, and excellent weatherproofing, making bitumen felt a long-lasting roofing option. It can withstand rain, snow, and even some foot traffic with ease.
  • Bitumen felt is a relatively inexpensive roofing material, making it a good choice if you're on a tight budget.
  • The basic design of a bitumen felt roof makes repairs or replacements straightforward, which means that experienced roofers can usually address issues quickly.

Single-Ply Roofs

A single-ply roof uses large, flexible sheets of material to create a watertight seal on flat or low-slope roofs. It’s most commonly used for commercial and industrial buildings, but can also be used on residential ones. Here are some of its key benefits:

  • A single-ply membrane is much lighter than a traditional built-up roofing (BUR) system, which can be a major advantage for buildings with weight restrictions.
  • A single-ply roof can be installed quickly and easily, with minimal disruption to building occupants. Unlike a BUR system, it doesn't require the (potentially dangerous) use of hot asphalt or torches.
  • Designed to create a watertight seal, a single-ply membrane is resistant to rain, hail, and snow. It can last for many years with proper care and maintenance.

Lead Flat Roofs

A lead flat roof is a roof covering made from sheets of lead - no surprises there! It’s a popular choice for several reasons:

  • Lead is incredibly durable, and a roof made from it can last for well over 100 years in some cases. This makes it a very cost-effective option in the long run.
  • Lead is highly resistant to water damage and the elements. It can withstand harsh weather conditions without degrading, making it a low-maintenance option.
  • Lead is a soft metal that can be easily shaped to fit complex roof features, such as around chimneys or skylights. This makes it ideal for intricate roof designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are many benefits to installing a green roof. They reduce storm-water runoff to reduce the risk of flooding in drainage basins; they reduce energy use of heating and air-conditioning by insulating the roofs and keeping the building warmer in winter and cooler in summer; a roof’s lifespan is increased by reducing heat fluctuations and UV exposure which degrades roof membranes; they help to mitigate the effects of global warming; the urban heat island effect is lessened in large cities; air and water quality is improved; they act as noise insulation and can reduce noise transfer by 8 decibels; they increase biodiversity and reclaim land lost by development and urban sprawl; and of course, they look beautiful!

In most cases where green roofs are installed on existing buildings, planning permission is not required. However, it is always advisable when making any kind of alteration to a building to contact your local planning department.

Green roofs can be created on flat or pitched roofs. Ideally, a green roof will go on a slope up to 10° but if it's on a slope over 20°, make sure you have a frame to stop the green roof from slipping. First, a layer of waterproofing needs to be added to your shed or garage.

Green roofs last 40 years or more and attract wildlife such as birds, bees and spiders.

In addition to thermal insulation, a green roof also has a sound-insulating effect. The combination of substrate, plants and the embedded air in the green roof system provide good sound insulation. Sound waves are absorbed and reflected.

Yes. Green Roofs are 'Low-Maintenance' not 'No-Maintenance'. Green roof maintenance is generally a very simple process. They are designed so that they will not require endless hours keeping them looking at their best.
